Mokhtar Al Souq

I never picked the name. The folks at the market just started calling me that.

Genuine copper rakweh, seven dollars. The real deal, you won't find another like it in the whole souq. The door of my grandfather's house, God rest his soul. Come in, come in, our home is yours.

A few old things from my great-uncle's house. These are memories, they're not for sale.

A gift from my mother-in-law the day I became Mokhtar. Honestly, mine is a sweetheart, God bless her. May He send every one of you a good wife and a kind mother-in-law. The market traders' attendance book. Bless them, not one of them has ever missed a day. They're all out chasing their daily bread. The calculator gets to the shop before the goods do. And we keep a second one, for counting our words before we speak 😄

My mother's window, God keep her with me. Every morning she's up feeding the birds before she's had her own coffee. God watch over my mother, and over your mothers and loved ones too.

My childhood bike. Thirty-five years I've been pedaling it around the souq. That's how I met all the traders. God, those were the days.
